Overview

The Action Selector web part (formerly known as the Action Picker) is used to select the pre-defined actions you want to make available to your users. The actions are presented to the user on a drop-down menu that can be placed anywhere on a page.

The Action Selector is used to execute only those actions that are independent of roll-ups and any other web parts, and do not require any additional data or other input to be executed beyond what is supplied in the action definition or entered by the user when the action is run. For the Winter 06 release, this meant that the Action Selector could only be used to execute Go To URL-type actions. With the Summer 2006 and later releases, the Action Selector can also be used to execute Create List Item-type actions that to not copy data from a roll-up item. Additional action types will be available in future releases.

To use the Action Selector, the user simply selects the action they want from the drop-down and clicks Go. If the action is a Go to URL action, the destination site is opened in either the same window or a new one, depending on how the action is defined. If the action is a Create List Item action, either the item is created or the user is prompted for data before the item is created.

NOTE 1: If the action is defined to be opened in a new window, make sure your browser is configured to allow pop-ups; if pop-ups are blocked, the action will fail.

NOTE 2: If you are interested in viewing the help for this component running on the Workplace Suite Winter 2007 for SharePoint 2007, click here. As of the Winter 2007 release, this component was renamed to the “Action Selector.”
