Upgraded List Views and Templates

CorasWorks has learned of two issues regarding list views, site templates, and list templates created from upgraded sites. Both of these issues can be resolved using the Design Migrator and the Update List Views option on the Settings tab.

The first issue is caused by the fact that SharePoint does not recompile ghosted list views from SharePoint 2003 to 2007 until you physically access the list and look at the view. It occurs when you upgrade to SharePoint 2007 and then make a site template or list template before looking at any of the associated lists. When the template is used to create a site or list, the list views in all of the associated lists are reset to the base SharePoint set of fields. For example, the CorasWorks navigation list contains eight fields, but SharePoint’s base set only contains two fields. In order to avoid this issue, you would need to open each list associated with a site before creating a site template, and this only applies to ghosted list views. Unghosted list views cannot be repaired by looking at the list; additional work must be performed. The original site upgraded through SharePoint looks and works as expected; the issue is only when you create templates based on the site or list.       The second issue occurs if you opened a list view in FrontPage before you upgraded to SharePoint 2007. When you upgrade, the list views are reset to a base SharePoint set of fields, as above.  However, even if you access the list and look at the view in SharePoint Designer or SharePoint’s list interface, the list views will not be recompiled or “fixed.”

The Update List Views option resolves both of these issues.

NOTE: The Update List Views option is enabled by default, but should only be used when migrating sites from SharePoint 2003 to SharePoint 2007. When using the Design Migrator to change the design of an existing 2007 page or to deploy web parts to an existing 2007 page, this option should be turned off for improved performance.
